Create Easy Access With Cattle Guards

Cattle guards are elaborate metal grids that are placed in driveways, roads or access areas that will allow vehicles to past through, while keeping the cattle in place. These have been called cattle gates, cattle grids, Texas gates, cattle stops and more. They are all designed to do the same thing.

Designed over 100 years ago to keep cows off of the railways, cattle guards have been proven to be a natural deterrent to bovine, but do not always work for other four legged animals. The natural athleticism of deer, will allow them to jump cattle guards that are 8' in length. It has been shown that they are sometimes deterred when two are bolted together creating a length of 16' feet. Deer will quickly figure out it is easier to jump the fence line. Sheep have been known to roll over them, and they pose an unacceptable risk to horses, who have been known to get their hooves stuck between the bars. Dogs and goats are nimble enough to walk right over them.

The cattle guards are created utilizing square or round, parallel metal bars. Constructed with heavy duty structural .188 in either a 3.5" or 4.5" diameter, they are built to last. End capping helps to prevent rusting and they come in a variety of sizes and colors. Steel gray and industrial yellow are two of the most popular colors. They can be ordered in either a flat or boxed style, and with or without wings. There is now even a removable box style that allows for cleaning ease of the vault that the grid sits on. Permanent boxed guards have the boxes welded to the guard, creating a stronger unit. These are usually used in low lying places, construction sites, and wash-outs. These are designed to allow for them to eventually be moved.

The flat style of a cattle guards are installed on footings over a vault. These are usually used for permanent installations and do not require the use of a box. These can also be used over small creeks, or streams of running water. While designed to be a permanent installation, these are the least expensive guards to construct and offer the most flexibility.

Barn World carries the largest variety of cattle guards that you can find. They even have one designed for ATV riders, which do not even require you to dig a pit. These are simply laid on the ground at the point of desired entry. What could be easier than that. You can see these as well as the entire line of guards at www.barnworld.com.
